MH Safe’s work can be emotionally taxing because it involves noticing instances of possible mental illness discrimination and having potentially difficult conversations with individuals who may not react well to learning of these problems. Not only is it painful to see published content that stigmatizes mental health problems, but it is traumatic to face defensive, avoidant, and hostile reactions from people and organizations who never expected to learn they might have made harmful mistakes.
This website highlight how MH Safe has used AI to mitigate these problems, and shares resources to help others do the same
A Vision For Using AI (2023)
In 2023, when presenting at the Mediate.com AI conference, MH Safe founded Dan Berstein presented on “AI Bias Awareness and Prevention,” highlighting how AI models contained biases against people with mental health conditions. During this presentation, Dan also shared a vision of how MH Safe could operate in the future by using AI to mitigate the traumas involved in this work. To see the presentation, click the tab below. MH Safe also produced an early exercise to help law students experiment with using AI to scan content and de-escalate confrontations, which you can access here.
Incorporating AI (2023)
In 2025, John Lande launched RPS Coach as a free ChatGPT-empowered tool that could help dispute resolvers access an AI interface trained on his scholarship and to use his voice. MH Safe began using RPS Coach to help in locating harmful content, analyzing it, and developing effective outreach messages that incorporate all stakeholder perspectives.
You can learn more about that process at MH Safe’s AIM Messenger website, and more about the overall Stigma Spotlights method at our Stigma Spotlights page. MH Safe also worked with NextLevel Mediation‘s software to get AI support with projects as well, particularly when inputting private correspondences and seeking secure reviews of that material.
The Emotional Use of AI (2026)
In 2026, Dan Berstein and Bob Bergman did work on “The Emotional Use of AI,” which was part of MH Mediate’s 2026 Mental Health Month activities. The resulting article is available to review by clicking here. It includes a call for readers to complete a survey about their emotional use of AI, which you can complete by clicking here.
