Mental Health and Conflicts: A Handbook for Empowerment was originally published by the American Bar Association (ABA) in 2022 and sold for $99.95. In 2025, the book was republished by DRI Press with a commitment to make it easily accessible to anyone who wants it. That includes:
- A more affordable physical version
- A free electronic version
- Free resources available below

DRI Skills Lab
Mitchell Hamline’s DRI Press is the publisher of Mental Health and Conflicts. DRI created the free Laboratory for Advancing Dispute Resolution Skills Teaching (DRI Skills Lab) in response to the challenge and opportunity to develop and share skills-based resources to support the teaching of dispute resolution and more. Access the DRI Skills Lab to find a searchable database of skills-based resources, especially for those teaching dispute resolution.

Mindquity
MH Mediate’s Mindquity Platform provides free resources to help people living with mental health needs to use conflict resolution skills to seek support, pursue accommodations, or overcome rejection. These resources were funded by the NY state and city mental health departments. Sign up for your free account to access fifteen different tools, complete with explainer videos, so you can be ready to address day-to-day stigma.

TRI
The Mental Health Safe Project (MH Safe) launched the Trauma-Informed Response Initiative (TRI – pronounced “try”) in 2024, inspired by Dan Berstein’s challenges with the American Bar Association. TRI collects resources to help organizations and practitioners have ways to respond to challenging behaviors without writing anyone off as difficult, aberrant, or even mentally ill. Programs include tools to help with distress, bullying, and boundary challenges.

Surveys
Readers of Mental Health and Conflicts are invited to participate in surveys to help with the sequel book, Mental Health and Conflicts II: A Toolkit for Distress, and other forthcoming projects including Bipolar Terror! and a book about bullying. Click the button below to access a link of current surveys.

MH Safe
In 2021, MH Mediate launched the Mental Health Safe Project (MH Safe) to create resources to help people living with mental health problems be safe from stigma. Through MH Safe, people can report inappropriate publications and everyday discrimination, find addendum resources to supplement harmful content with better resources, and more.

Embracing Bipolar
In 2025, Dan Berstein celebrated twenty years since he was first hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In honor of this milestone, he created new resources like a guide to “20 Lessons From Twenty Years,” and he launched a variety of projects to thank people and address important unresolved issues from the past two decades.
